Book Review: You Are Not Alone

In You Are Not Alone we follow a woman named Shay who’s life isn’t turning out the way she expected. Her romantic feelings are unrequited, her job is a bust, and her most meaningful friendships are drifting apart. After she witnesses a woman named Amanda committing suicide she becomes fixated on her. Enter the Moore sisters and their group of friends, they want to know what connection Shay has to Amanda, and will go to great lengths to do so.

The synopsis given for this novel is extremely misleading, and makes it sound like You Are Not Alone is a novel about sisters trying to steal or take someone else’s life, which isn’t quite right. I wasn’t really affected by the synopsis though, because I tend to go into thrillers not knowing too much. 

I wanted to like this story, and initially I did. I thought the premise was unique, and because of what was heavily hinted upon early on in the novel I was excited for it. Things didn’t quite turn out the way I had hoped, and this novel ended up going in a more standard way and very unrealistic. I don’t actually care if my thrillers are realistic, but this was a bit too much, and there were several events that were very convenient to pull forward the story. Shay was an interesting enough character, but given all the foreshadowing surrounding her, I expected something more. 

What ultimately determines whether or not I like a thriller is how much I enjoy the plot twists and big reveals, and unfortunately You Are Not Alone did not impress in that regard, what unfolded in the novel felt overdone ultimately cheapened the experience for me.
