Top 5 Tuesday #2

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly MEME hosted by Bionic Book Worm, this week’s prompt is:

Top 5 Worst Rulers

Worst can be interpreted in more than one way, and I’ve taken more than one interpretation so I’ll be sure to clarify what I mean down below.

❥The Darkling (Grisha Verse by Leigh Bardugo)
So unfortunately I’m in the camp that does not like the Darkling. I don’t find him a particularly compelling villain and in my head he’s a 50-year-old man I don’t know why I have this mental image, but it’s stuck there until the Shadow and Bone adaption comes along to change it. He’s just too generic for my personal tastes. While he is successful at what he does and goes for what he wants, he’s one of my top 5 worst rulers because I don’t find him particularly interesting.

❥Leck (Graceling Trilogy by Kristin Cashore)
Leck is one of the worst rulers in the sense that he is an awful human being and he terrorizes and takes advantage of everyone. Unlike the Darkling, I do actually like Leck as a villain, especially in the first instalment, Graceling, Cashore just pulled off the mysterious yet terrifying vibe so well.

❥The Guardians (The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin)
There’s a lot that’s messed up and broken when it comes to the hierarchy of The Broken Earth series and it’s especially awful to have to read about the treatment of the Orogenes by the hands of the Guardians. They’re the worst in that they’re an awful group of people.

❥The King of Hearts (Heartless by Marissa Meyer)
These next two are the worst in that they’re just not fit for the job. The King of Hearts has absolutely no backbone, he’s much too easy to manipulate and influence. No wonder Wonderland is a mess.

❥King Il (Yona of the Dawn by Mizuho Kusanagi)
King Il is a similar situation to the King of Hearts. While Il’s intentions are good and his ideals are admirable, he’s too much of a dreamer and his actions ultimately cause turmoil in his kingdom.

Which rulers do you think are the worst? I’d love to know! Happy reading! 💗

  1. I did like the Darkling, but I definitely get what you’re saying. The only other book I read on your list is Heartless, and I honestly don’t even remember the King haha. I just remember finding everything in that book really underwhelming.
